Leigh Leopards set to leap into 24

Leigh Leopards are eagerly anticipating the Betfred Super League 2024 season and Adrain Lam and his enhanced 2024 squad are delighted to receive their fixtures for what will no doubt be another enthralling year of the greatest game of all, Rugby League.

Fresh from a break in Australia after the Pacific Cup Lammy is energised and refreshed for the big challenge ahead and can’t wait to get stuck into the action but is first looking forward to knitting together his successful 2023 squad with his new recruits for 2024.

Lam is no stranger to building a side and welcoming new recruits at the Leopards, having joined us as the then Centurions at the start of 2022 as a relegated and depleted Super League team with only eight players on the roster. From there with the guidance of Chris Chester and the investment of club owner Derek Beaumont he built an all-conquering side that went on to lift the treble of the AB Sundecks 1895 Cup, the Betfred Championship League Leaders Shield and the Betfred Championship grand final.

In the wake of the rebranded Leopards and continual growth of the club he saw a large turnaround with 14 new players of his squad as he poised to embark on a fourth attempt at Super League action for the town and a first for the newly named Leopards. That season saw us lift the Betfred Challenge Cup for the first time in 52 years and reach the play offs for the first time in our history with a fifth-place finish breaking numerous records, not least a sellout crowd against our neighbours the Warriors and also seeing five of the squad make the Super League dream team.

Head coach Adrian Lam commented: “I have always been an individual that wants to improve year on year and raise the standards both personally and of the team. Last season was fantastic and in many people’s eyes we overachieved but within we felt we put ourselves in a place where we could have achieved more than we did and we will start our season looking to evaluate that and put ourselves into a good place to maximise our opportunities.

“Chezzie has done another great job with the recruitment which may not be just finished yet with one more target still being worked on thanks to the fantastic support of our owner Derek Beaumont.”

Lam is under no illusions as to how tough the 2024 season will be and the expectations of everyone around and connected with the Leopards. He commented further: “Derek is extremely ambitious, a passion I share and last season gave him a taste of the success he has always craved and heavily invested in but now we want to build on that but we also realise we need to have some patience around that and keep building in the right direction.

“To have achieved what we did on our first year as a promoted team in Super League was fantastic and we have set the bar high as a result for this year. However, we love a challenge and we believe we have built strongly and it’s my job to connect the new players to the squad and improve us as a team and I am really excited about that.

“The fixtures give us a really tough start with a home tie to Huddersfield who will no doubt be vastly improved from an off season together and looking to make an impact after what they will have deemed a disappointing year for themselves. We then hit the road with two extremely tough fixtures in Wigan and Saints before returning to the Den to face Leeds, another side that will have significantly benefited from an off season together and looking to stamp their authority on the competition.

“There are no easy games in Super League and we have a tough period of away fixtures whilst our pitch is replaced this year which sees us have to play away for a longer period than usual but that is a price worth paying for our fantastic playing surface. It’s been great to get back this week and I am looking forward to being able to build the fixtures into my formats and prepare for what I know will be a tough but entertaining year of rugby league. I have no doubt the players will represent our town and fans with pride and passion, and I am sure Derek and the board will be putting on another feast of entertainment to accompany that. It’s going to be fantastic in the Den this year and I can’t wait to hear the roar”

Club owner Derek Beaumont added: “It’s always an exciting time of the season receiving your fixtures and one I eagerly anticipate so I can get the diary moving with various other commitments non least the all-important holidays! I am sure that is the case for many of our fans. There are many highlights and mouth watering ties none less than three against our neighbours Wigan, Saints and Salford but no doubt the one many are looking towards is the trip to Catalans and I am pleased to see we get that in June when we can make the most of the trip and the nice weather. It’s perhaps ironic that it’s again the team we face the week after the Challenge Cup final all be it away this time. We will obviously be focussing on trying to defend the Trophy and keep it at the club as a main part of our season, but everything doesn’t hinge on that. We have added to our squad and strengthened it in areas at the same time, but we are well aware that others have as well. Our goals this year are simply to be the best version of ourselves that we can be individually and collectively, and I know that if we do that then we will do the town proud and play a significant part in all three trophies.

“Its been inspiring to see the significant increase in memberships as this is what it’s all about. It’s important this year that we really work hard to get our crowds up and this is something that everyone can play a part in. I have long said it’s easier for 3000 people to each convince one person to attend than one person to convince 3000 to attend so hopefully our fans can buy into that and each do their job in bringing someone to at least a couple of games. With the Red Card membership being available for 6 x £10 payments giving access to two games it’s a really affordable way of introducing a friend or family to the club as their Christmas present and who knows they may just get hooked on the sport. The worst you will have done is given them access to watch two good bands and be entertained with a great atmosphere. Like Adrian the players and the rest of the staff at the club I can’t wait to see the action get under way and hear that roar as the leopards take to the field in the den for the first encounter against the Giants.”
