Leigh Leopards are delighted to confirm that Gareth O’Brien has extended his contract with the club and will remain a Leopard for the 2027 season.
O’Brien has been an important member of the Leigh squad since joining the club in 2023, bringing a wealth of experience and an outstanding Rugby League knowledge to Adrian Lam’s side.
The 34-year-old was part of the Leopards’ historic 2023 Challenge Cup-winning squad, playing his part as Leigh lifted the famous trophy at Wembley.
O’Brien has continued to play a valuable role during the 2026 season, featuring regularly as injuries have affected the squad and demonstrating his versatility by covering both full back and the halves.
That versatility has once again highlighted the importance of O’Brien to the Leopards, with his experience proving valuable both on and off the field.
Speaking after extending his stay, O’Brien said: “I wanted to stay . Whether that’s in a different sort of role again, similar to this year, I’m happy with that.
“I’m very grateful to still be doing what I do at my age. I’ve just got to keep enjoying it while it lasts, and I’m already looking forward to next year.
“I’m grateful every time I run out at this stadium now.”
Head Coach Adrian Lam is delighted to have O’Brien’s experience available for another season and praised the contribution he has made during his time at the club.
“I’m really happy to have extended Gaz’s stay at The Leopards. He’s one of the finest Rugby League brains I’ve worked with and has been vital during his time here.
“Obviously, he’s nearing the back end of his career now, so he knows his role will change slightly. But I told him that last year and, because of injuries this season, he’s made plenty of appearances.
“That just shows the importance of having a versatile player who can cover in the halves and at full back.”
Director of Rugby Andrew Henderson also welcomed the extension, highlighting O’Brien’s consistency and the standards he brings to the Leigh squad.
“We’re delighted to secure Gareth’s future with the club. He is a player who consistently delivers and, importantly, embodies the standards and values we’re looking to build throughout our squad.
“Gareth’s experience, versatility and game understanding make him a tremendous asset to our team. Whether he’s playing in the halves, at full back or elsewhere, he brings composure, competitiveness and leadership, and those qualities are invaluable across a long Super League season.
“Throughout our discussions, Gareth made it clear how much he enjoys being part of this club and what we’re building at Leigh. That commitment was reciprocated from our side because we see him as an important part of our squad.
“As we continue to strengthen the squad and drive standards across the organisation, retaining quality people and quality players is essential. Gareth is both. We’re pleased he’s chosen to continue his journey with Leigh Leopards, and we’re excited to see the contribution he will make in 2027.”
Now set to continue into a fifth season with the club, O’Brien will once again provide experience, versatility and Rugby League know-how as the Leopards prepare for the 2027 campaign.
