Leigh Leopards can confirm that their Betfred Challenge Cup semi-final against Warrington Wolves will be held at St Helens’ Totally Wicked Stadium on Sunday 11 May (4:15pm kick-off).
This will be our tenth Challenge Cup semi-final and only the club’s third in the last 51 years.
Leigh first reached the last four of the competition in 1899, losing to Oldham at Broughton Rangers’ Wheater’s Field ground. In 1908 they lost to Hull at Halifax.
In 1921 Leigh defeated Rochdale Hornets 10-0 at Wigan and went on to win the Challenge Cup for the first time in the club’s history, defeating Halifax 13-0 at The Cliff, Broughton.
In the 1950s Leigh suffered semi-final defeat on three occasions, 1952, 1957 and 1959, losing to Featherstone Rovers, Barrow and Wigan respectively.
Alex Murphy inspired Leigh to a semi-final victory over Huddersfield at Wigan in 1971 before leading the team to their second Challenge Cup victory, 24-7 over Leeds at Wembley.
In 1974 Leigh lost to Featherstone Rovers at Headingley and in 1987 lost 14-8 to St Helens at Wigan.
Renamed Leigh Leopards, Adrian Lam’s team celebrated the club’s first season since the rebrand with a dramatic 12-10 victory over Saints at Warrington two years ago before going on to defeat Hull KR in golden point extra-time to record the club’s third Challenge Cup success.
Leigh and Warrington have met on 11 previous occasions in the Challenge Cup, the first in 1921 when Leigh won 8-3 at Wilderspool a last 16 tie following a replay on their way to the final.
After defeats at the Wire’s hands in 1930, 1933 and 1948 Leigh beat Warrington at the last 16 stage in 1959 and in the last 32 stage in both 1968 and 1982.
Warrington have since won all three meetings in the summer era, 2001, 2008 and most recently 34-24 in the quarter-final at the Halliwell Jones Stadium ten years ago.
Leigh have had four Challenge Cup victories over Warrington to their opponents’ six with one match drawn.
