Leigh Leopards are delighted to confirm that Matt Davis has extended his contract with the club and will remain a Leopard for the 2027 season.
Davis has become an integral member of the Leigh squad since arriving from Warrington Wolves, establishing himself as one of the club’s most dependable players. His versatility, work ethic and experience have made him a valued member of Adrian Lam’s squad, while his influence extends beyond his performances on the field.
Davis’ Rugby League journey began with Leicester Storm, where his performances earned him a place in the Midlands Academy before a move to London Broncos.
It was in the capital that Davis made his professional debut, featuring against Featherstone Rovers in the 2016 Challenge Cup. Loan spells with Hemel Stags and London Skolars followed, giving the young forward valuable experience before he became a key part of the Broncos side that won the 2018 Championship and secured promotion to Super League.
His performances during that campaign earned him a move to Warrington Wolves, where he quickly experienced the biggest occasions in the sport. Davis featured in the 2019 Challenge Cup Final at Wembley as Warrington defeated St Helens 18-4 to lift the trophy.
A move to Leigh followed, and Davis would once again play a significant role on the road to Challenge Cup glory. He was part of the historic Leopards squad that lifted the trophy at Wembley in 2023, adding a second Challenge Cup winners’ medal to his collection.
Since then, Davis has remained a constant presence throughout Leigh’s time in Super League, becoming one of the senior members of a squad that has undergone significant change over recent seasons.
Now entering another season with the Leopards, Davis is delighted to have secured his future at the club.
“Coming into a contract year, I always knew this is where I wanted to stay. I knew I wanted to stay with this bunch of lads and the coaching staff.
“I’ve been here for four years and I feel like we’ve done a really good job. I knew I wanted to stay, it was right for myself and my family as well. I’m obviously really happy.”
Head Coach Adrian Lam believes retaining Davis is particularly important during a period of change within the Leigh squad, describing him as “Mr Reliable, Mr Consistent”.
“Matty has been a mainstay of the club since the rebrand to Leigh Leopards and has been a big driver in improving the standards here, and he’s someone I look to a lot to help with that.
“In a year with a lot of turnover, it’s a big positive for the club to retain Matty’s services. He’s one of the senior players in the group and brings a lot of experience and quality.”
Director of Rugby Andrew Henderson is equally pleased to have secured Davis’ future, having previously worked with him and seen first-hand the qualities he brings.
“It’s great that Matt has chosen to continue his journey with Leigh Leopards. Having worked with Matt previously, I’ve had the opportunity to see first-hand the quality of person and player he is, so I’m particularly pleased we’ve been able to secure his future with the club.
“Matt is the type of player every coach wants in their environment. He’s extremely professional, prepares thoroughly, competes hard and always puts the team’s interests first. Those qualities have been evident throughout his career and are a big reason why he is so highly respected within our squad.
“What stands out most about Matt is his character. He brings consistency, reliability and a genuine commitment to getting better every day. He sets a great example for younger players and contributes enormously to the standards and culture we’re striving to build at Leigh.
“There was never any doubt from our perspective that Matt is someone we wanted to retain. He remains an important part of our plans moving forward, and we’re excited to see him continue playing a key role as we look to build on the progress we’ve made as a club.
“We’re delighted he has extended his stay with the Leopards, and I’m looking forward to Matt continuing his journey with us.”
From Leicester Storm to two Challenge Cup Final victories and now one of the senior figures within the Leigh squad, Davis has built a career on reliability, versatility and consistency.
He will now continue that journey in Leopard print, with another season at Leigh to come in 2027.
