Leigh Leopards are delighted to confirm the Women’s team squad numbers ahead of the 2024 season

Head coach Kieron Purtill has named a 30-player strong squad which will again be captained by Mairead Quinn.

The Leopards Women enjoyed a fine inaugural season in 2023, and just missed out on a place in Super League. After Barrow Raiders won the promotion grand final at York, the Leopards will compete in tier two of the Women’s Championship, The Northern Women’s Championship.

Nine teams made up the Northern Championship with only the Leopards and Salford Red Devils from this side of the Pennines. Bradford Bulls, Castleford Tigers, Dewsbury Moor, Hull KR, Oulton Raidettes, Sheffield Eagles and Stanningley make up the Yorkshire challenge.

The Championship season starts on the first weekend of March. Full fixtures and venues will be announced shortly.

The end of season play-offs start after Round 18 of the Championship season.

In Week One the top four teams play off (1v4 and 2v3) with the winners competing in the Northern Championship Grand Final in Week 2.

In Week 3 the Grand Final winners of the Northern Championship play the Grand Final winners of the Southern Championship. This game will be played on Saturday 28 September for the national champion title.

Week 4 concludes the season with the national champions from Week 3 playing the bottom team in Super League for a place in Super League in 2025.

In addition, Leigh Leopards will compete in a group stage against Huddersfield Giants, Hull KR and Leeds Rhinos in the Betfred Challenge Cup with the top two sides from that group progressing to the quarterfinals. The Leopards will play the Rhinos and Giants at home and Hull KR away.

Keiron Purtill said: “It’s always an exciting part of preseason announcing squad numbers and this season has been no different.

“We have lots of competition for places and quite a few new faces who supporters will get to know over the season. This season stretches over a longer period with more games and the whole squad will be needed.

“As well as announcing squad numbers this week our 2024 captains were also confirmed. Mairead Quinn will continue as team captain after leading the team brilliantly last season.

“Once again Mairead will be supported by two vice captains in Kate Howard, who carried out this role superbly last year and new signing Claire Mullaney, who brings a wealth of experience and quality with her both on and off the field.”

Mairead Quinn said: “It’s a real honour to be reappointed captain. I’m a Leigh town girl and it means a lot.

“We are all really positive as we look ahead to what will be a long and challenging season. It’s great to know that we have the full support of everyone at the club and we really appreciate the massive support of our sponsors and fans.

“The girls have been working hard in pre-season with some really tough sessions and the newcomers to the group are settling in well and already feeling part of the club. Everyone is excited and can’t wait for the season to start.”
