Leigh Leopards are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Kevin Ashcroft on 2 March 2026 at the age of 81 and extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and all who knew and loved him.

Kevin was a true legend of Rugby League whose connection with Leigh was profound and lasting. Born in Newton-le-Willows on 5 June 1944, he went on to enjoy a distinguished playing career, representing Great Britain and Lancashire at the highest level.

Kevin’s association with Leigh began in 1967 when he joined the club and quickly became a cornerstone of the team. A tough, intelligent and committed hooker, he made nearly 200 appearances in his first spell and was instrumental in some of the club’s most memorable moments, including playing a key role in Leigh’s unforgettable 24-7 triumph over Leeds in the 1971 Challenge Cup Final at Wembley.

Beyond his on-field exploits, Kevin embodied the spirit and resilience that define Leigh Rugby League. His work ethic, competitive fire and leadership were evident to teammates and supporters alike, and he later returned to guide the club from the coach’s box. Across two spells as Leigh coach, he helped shape generations of players with the same passion and determination he showed during his playing days.

Kevin was also the Commercial Manager in his last spell at the club and was responsible for bringing new sponsorship on board including one Derek Beaumont. A relationship that resulted in Derek establishing the consortium that took over Leigh in 2002.

Kevin’s impact on Rugby League extended well beyond Hilton Park — he also enjoyed successful spells at other clubs, including Warrington and Salford, and earned a place in the Warrington Hall of Fame in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the sport.

A consummate professional, Kevin remained a proud ambassador for Leigh throughout his life, always carrying the club’s colours with dignity and pride. His influence will be felt for years to come, not only in the record books but in the countless players and supporters he inspired.

Club owner Derek Beaumont said “I am deeply saddened by this news. I haven’t managed to see Kevin for some time. Myself and Mike Latham attended his house with the Challenge Cup but were unable to reach him. I had learned just prior to going away that he had been admitted to care and I was hoping to visit him prior to receiving the sad news of his passing.

Kevin was my favourite player as a child as I played hooker myself, although I was not nearly as tough as him. I got to know Kevin when I opened my first business over 25 years ago, when he was commercial manager at the club and sold me a sleeve sponsorship. He later aligned me with the late Tommy Coleman to establish a take over via a consortium of 8 people after leaving the club and starting work with my business. Kevin was the first sales manager for AB Sundecks when it was first established and was a very loyal. hard-working, loveable character.

My deepest condolences go to his sons Gary and Craig. The club will pay Kevin full respects – to his families wishes – when details of his celebration of his life are confirmed.

Kevin Ashcroft will always be remembered as a Leigh stalwart, a fierce competitor, and a gentleman of the game.”
