In Memory of John Kear

Leigh Leopards are saddened to learn of the passing of John Kear, one of rugby league’s most respected coaches and ambassadors.

Born in Castleford, John enjoyed a playing career with his hometown club before establishing himself as one of the game’s most admired coaches. He achieved famous Challenge Cup success with Sheffield Eagles in 1998 and later guided Hull FC to Challenge Cup glory in 2005, while also enjoying notable spells with Wakefield Trinity, Batley Bulldogs, Bradford Bulls and Widnes Vikings.

Current Leigh Leopards Head Coach Adrian Lam was among the many players whose career intersected with John’s during his time at Wigan. During a 2017 interview, when reflecting on the outstanding players he had coached, John named Lam among the very best, a testament to the high regard in which he held him.

John also made a significant contribution on the international stage, coaching England at the 2000 Rugby League World Cup and serving Wales with distinction for more than a decade.

Renowned for his passion, enthusiasm and deep knowledge of rugby league, John remained a popular and influential figure throughout the sport long after his coaching career, sharing his insight through broadcasting and media work.

Derek Beaumont said “John was a fantastic man that was so passionate about the sport. His love of it was surpassed only by his knowledge of it and it is fitting that he got to commentate on the Challenge Cup before his sad passing. The world of rugby league will be deeply saddened by this news and our thoughts are with his family and friends as well as our friends over at Wakefield where he always welcomed you with his huge infectious smile, who I know will be deeply saddened given his role there over the past few years. His name will live on through his historical contribution to the sport. Rest in peace”

Everyone at Leigh Leopards sends sincere condolences to John’s family, friends and all those throughout rugby league who had the privilege of knowing him.

A dedicated coach, proud servant of rugby league and one of the game’s true gentlemen.

John Kear (1954–2026)
