Remembering Jonathan Simpkin

Leigh Leopards are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Jonathan Simpkin at the age of 58.

Johnny, as he was known, was a familiar face and friend to many of our supporters in his role as joint manager of the Superleigh lottery and was an ardent supporter of the Leopards.

Leigh Leopards CEO Neil Jukes said: “On behalf of myself and everyone associated with Leigh Leopards our heartfelt condolences go to his wife Michelle and their family and friends.

“I’d have known Johnny for well over 15 years and during all that time nothing was ever too much for him. He was a gentleman that would always meet you with a heartfelt handshake and ask you how you were.

“It was only one week previous where I was sitting in a meeting with him, discussing and looking ahead on joint ventures. This involved the Leigh Leopards and those of Superleigh Lottery, where he devoted so much time to serve the community of Leigh which in tandem supported our club.

“His loss will far exceed those of just the lottery members as his presence and character throughout the club and in particular all our fans were infectious.

“God bless Johnny, we will miss you, but never forget you…. Jukesy.”

A former pupil of Newton Westpark Primary School and Bedford High School, Johnny was a member of HM Forces, serving with distinction in the British Army, before entering ‘civvy street’ and taking up his current role.

Johnny bravely confronted some serious health issues over the years and was always keen to help others in any way he could. He was actively involved in local charities and fundraising and had a particular dedication to the British Legion and supporting ex-servicemen.

Sincere sympathies are extended to his family and many friends at this sad time.
