Leopards Vs Bulldogs, March 16th, 3PM KO
Leigh Leopards have been drawn at home to Batley Bulldogs in the fourth round (last 16) of the Betfred Challenge Cup. The tie will be played on Sunday the 16th of March with a 3pm KO.
The teams have met on six previous occasions in the competition with Leopards holding a one hundred percent record.
Batley won the Challenge Cup in each of the first two seasons and Leigh were the first team to beat them in the competition, 16-6 in a last 16 tie at Mather Lane in 1899, with 9,000 in attendance.
In 1909 Leigh edged through 6-5 before a 5,000 crowd at Mather Lane in the last 32 round.
Another 50 years passed before the teams met again in the cup, Leigh winning 19-2 at Hilton Park before 5,500 spectators.
In the summer era the teams have met on three occasions. In 2005 Leigh won 25-8 at Mount Pleasant in a last 32 tie watched by a crowd of 1,661, Australian James King scoring two tries.
In 2018 Leigh’s 8-4 last 64 victory at Mount Pleasant featured a try by Ricky Bailey and two Jack Owens goals with just 606 spectators braving the wintry conditions.
In 2020 at the same stage, Leigh’s 36-10 win at LSV included two Iain Thornley tries and six Ben Reynolds goals.
Batley’s last visit to LSV was for the 2022 Championship Grand Final when Leigh’s 44-12 victory guaranteed their return to Super League. Lachlan Lam and Edwin Ipape are the only surviving members of the Leigh team on duty that day that are still in the Leopards’ squad.
