2024 was a breakthrough season for Umyla who became a regular in the Leopards side and formed a dynamic right-wing partnership with Darnell McIntosh. The son of Rugby League legend Ellery Hanley, he played his junior rugby with local community club Shevington Sharks before emerging through Wigan’s academy system into a first team winger or fullback.
Leopards head coach Adrian Lam handed Hanley his Super League debut in 2020 against St Helens and in 2021 he played twice against Leigh in the topflight, impressing on both occasions. He played in Leigh’s opening Betfred Super League game behind closed doors at Headingley as Wigan recorded a narrow 20-18 victory. In the late season game at the DW Stadium he scored a hat-trick of tries from the wing in Wigan’s 50-6 win.
In 2022 Hanley played ten games on extended dual registration at Newcastle Thunder, playing twice against Leigh. He made his Leopards’ debut in the 2023 Challenge Cup victory at York Knights after furthering his experience with a loan spell at Rochdale Hornets. He confirmed his talent with hat-tricks in successive games against Salford and Featherstone early in the 2024 season and scored his third Leopards hat-trick in the early 2025 season win against Catalans.
